Compagnie Générale des Eaux was a French water utility company founded in 1853, which significantly expanded its operations into environmental services, waste management, and energy over the following century. In 1998, the company rebranded as Vivendi, eventually divesting its environmental assets to form what is now known as Veolia Environnement.
